Expressions of Métis Religion and Spirituality Exhibit

  • Harcourt House 10215 112 Street Northwest Edmonton, Alberta, T5K 1M7 Canada (map)

Six Métis artists, Arlo Henry, Christopher Savard, Jocelyn Lamothe, Krista Leddy, Kirsten Lindquist, and Maria Nelson, part of the Métis Nation within Alberta, have come together to create an exhibition representing the diverse identities and experiences of Métis Religion and Spirituality. Central to their research is the question of how historical legacies and contemporary influences shape Métis individuals’ engagement with traditional Indigenous spirituality and religion and the subsequent implications for cultural identity, resilience, and community well-being. This body of work has evolved from and is formed by conversations with the artists and their connections to, community, Elders and researchers, and religious leaders. Their inquiry focuses on exploring the varied expressions of Métis Religion and Spirituality within the Métis Homeland. Artists have been encouraged to explore their relationship to their own spirituality and how that has grown and been reshaped through different and unique traditions that have been inherited, learned or rediscovered. The work created represents the various artistic disciplines, including visual art, sculpture, and projection art.

This exhibit was born from conversations had within the Métis arts community around the diversity of spirituality and religious traditions, despite the stereotype many people have about Métis religion. Cutting through the monolith of only being connected to one religion historically, artists were given space to explore their relationship with their own spirituality and how that has been reshaped through unique experiences and perspectives that have been inherited, learned or rediscovered. Spirituality is a diverse experience for Métis people and this exhibit only recognizes a small sample of the complex relationships Métis people have with Religion and Spirituality
